Cistus Decumbens, also known as Rock Rose, a recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit for outstanding excellence makes a low growing, spreading, evergreen shrub forming a dome shape of narrow, dark green sticky leaves, amongst which the five petaled white flowers appear with their golden yellow centres, each delicate petal having a purple blotch at its base, highly attractive to the butterflies and other beneficial insects for the garden. Suitable for the mixed border, patio/container planting or ground cover on slopes and banks.
Looking After Your Cistus Lusitanicus Decumbens
Generally pest and disease free, an easy to grow garden shrub in many if not all locations. This low maintenance, drought resistant shrub will benefit from a sunny position in all types of garden from Cottage planting schemes to the City garden and coastal areas, tolerating most soils, although preferring a poor, free draining, dry site away from any damp or wet conditions, making this an ideal plant for ground cover along a bank or slope. These Cistus do not like to be cut hard back, so require little pruning, any light pruning to maintain shape or prevent over crowding should be done after flowering. Apply a general purpose fertiliser early Spring to encourage fresh new growth during the coming season.
