Choisya Aztec Pearl, or Mexican Orange Blossom as its often referred to, is a compact, evergreen garden shrub with bright green glossy foliage, divided into slender leaflets. Refreshing, clusters of small, pink tinged, fragrant and pearl like, white flowers appear during May and the plant often produces a second flush in late Summer. These provide a great attraction for the many butterflies and other beneficial insects in the garden. This pretty evergreen flowering shrub provides year round colour and interest and has become a firm favourite within the sensory garden, mixed shrub border and even as an informal low hedge . To top all this, this Choisya has been awarded the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.
Looking After Your Choisya Aztec Pearl
Generally pest and disease free… and easy to grow, this evergreen flowering shrub is happy in many, if not all locations. It is also a low maintenance shrub which will benefit from a sunny or partially shaded area in all types of gardens, from Cottage planting schemes, court yard or sensory gardens, to coastal areas. Plant in a fertile, moist, but well drained soil in a sheltered area away from any very cold/drying winter winds. Feed with a good quality general purpose fertiliser in early Spring to encourage strong fresh new growth in the coming season. Prune immediately after flowering removing 25-30 centimetres of the flowered stem to encourage a second flush of flowers late Summer/early Autumn, and at the same time removing any damaged or unwanted branches to maintain shape.
