Chitalpa Summer Bells, also known as the ‘Desert Willow Tree’ is an unusual deciduous tree that has come about by cross breeding the Catalpa and Chilopsis.

It is known for its willow-type leaves that are bright green, elongated and cover the stem from early Spring. This variant refers to the glorious flower display of large, exotic and frilly pink blooms that resemble dangling trumpet-shaped bells which appear on new growth during June to August. These blooms are light pink in colour with a yellow throat and veiny-markings. They will bloom for the entire Summer period in upright panicles measuring approximately 15cm long. The scent is delicate but sweet. In Autumn the flowers drop and the willowy foliage turns an attractive warm shade of yellow before falling with the frosts.

How to care for your Chitalpa Summer Bells

  • Watering: While drought-tolerant, especially once established, young trees benefit from regular watering. During prolonged dry spells, provide deep watering to ensure the soil remains consistently moist.
  • Soil: Plant in well-draining soil, as these do not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Sandy or loamy soil with good drainage is ideal.
  • Pruning: Prune selectively to shape the tree and remove any dead or crossing branches. They respond well to pruning, and judicious trimming can encourage a more compact form.
  • Fertilisation: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in Spring to support healthy growth. They are not heavy feeders, so moderation in fertilisation is key.
  • Winter Protection: While generally hardy down to -10˚C, providing some protection during severe winters, such as mulching around the base, can be beneficial, especially in regions with colder temperatures.
