Chimonanthus Praecox, commonly known as ‘Wintersweet’, is a vigorous deciduous shrub.  It has lance shaped dark green leaves and small, sweetly scented, yellow flowers stained purple inside which appear on bare branches during the Winter months.   A superb plant for the mixed border or close to the house where you can enjoy the fragrance of its Winter flowers.  Whole stems are often cut by florists and used for indoor fragrant flower arrangements.

Looking After Your Chimonanthus Praecox

Generally pest and disease free, this is an easy to grow low maintenance Winter flowering shrub.  It will benefit from a sunny or partially shaded position in a fertile, moist, but well drained soil in all types of garden.  Minimal pruning is required.  Remove dead or diseased branches in late Spring and at the same time apply a good quality general purpose fertiliser to encourage strong, fresh new growth.
