Chaenomeles Cameo, also known as the ‘Japanese Quince, is a deciduous, medium sized dense shrub of rounded habit and is known for its large, double pink, flushed apricot flowers that bloom in Spring which are then followed by green edible fruits turning yellow later in the year. The plant is a deciduous shrub that typically grows to a height of 1.5 metres and a width of 2.5 metres.

The history of the Chaenomeles Cameo can be traced back to the early 20th century, when it was first developed by the German breeder, Carl Peter Thunberg. Thunberg is known for his contributions to the breeding of ornamental plants, and the Cameo cultivar is considered one of his most successful creations. The cultivar was first introduced to the public in 1913, and it quickly gained popularity for its large, double flowers and vibrant colour.  The leaves are glossy and dark green, and they turn a beautiful orange-red colour in the Autumn. The plant is also low maintenance, making it perfect for gardeners of all skill levels.

How to care for your Chaenomeles Superba Cameo

  1. Planting: Should be planted in well-drained soil in a location that receives full sun or partial shade.
  2. Watering: Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant. However, it should be watered regularly during its first growing season to help it establish a deep root system.
  3. Pruning: Prune after it has finished flowering to remove any dead or damaged branches. This will also encourage the development of new growth.
  4. Fertilising: Feed the Cameo with a slow-release fertiliser in the Spring to promote healthy growth.
  5. Winter Care: It is hardy and can tolerate frost, but a heavy frost or freeze may cause damage to the branches or flowers. If you live in an area with particularly harsh winters, you may want to protect the plant with a thick layer of mulch or by covering it with burlap.

By following these simple care tips, you can ensure that your Chaenomeles Superba Cameo will thrive and bring beauty to your landscape for years to come.
