Chaenomeles Speciosa Kinshiden, commonly known as the ‘Japanese Flowering Quince’, it is an upright, deciduous garden shrub. Its small mid-green oval shaped foliage provides a wonderful backdrop to its clusters of double pale yellow/white flowers. These are an excellent pollinator providing much needed food to the beneficial insects visiting our gardens. As the flowers begin to fade they are replaced by aromatic, egg-shaped edible green fruits which turn a golden yellow as they ripen towards Autumn. Although these are very bitter if eaten straight from the plant, once cooked they make a very tasty preserve or jelly. Often seen growing against a wall or fence the Chaenomeles Kinshiden also makes an excellent informal hedge as its spiny stems makes it an effective deterrent to any unwanted visitors.
Looking After Your Chaenomeles Speciosa Kinshiden
Generally pest and disease free, although it may be affected by scale insects/aphids, the Chaenomeles Kinshiden is an easy to grow ornamental, flowering shrub in many, if not all locations. A low maintenance deciduous shrub which can benefit from either a sunny or partially shaded area in all types of garden. The sunnier the aspect the more abundant the flowers. It should be planted in fertile, moist, but well drained soil, with a good quality general purpose fertiliser being applied in early Spring. Only light prune the plant after flowering, removing any dead or damaged branches. If you are looking to hard prune, do this in winter months and remove the congested branches to the trunk.
