Carex Red Rooster, also known as ‘Leatherleaf Sedge’, is an ornamental grass known for its striking foliage that adds texture and colour to garden landscapes.

This evergreen sedge forms a graceful, arching clump of fine, narrow leaves that range in colour from bronze to rich, coppery red, with a distinctive, almost metallic sheen. The blades are thin and wiry, creating a sense of movement as they sway in the breeze. This variety typically grows to about 0.5 metre in both height and spread, making it an excellent choice for borders, containers, or as a contrasting element in mixed plantings.

It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, although it can tolerate a variety of soil conditions. Hardy and low-maintenance, this Carex variety is perfect for adding year-round interest to gardens, particularly in temperate climates.

How to care for your Carex Red Rooster

• Sunlight: Plant in a location that receives full sun to partial shade. It will develop its best colour in full sun, but it can also tolerate light shade.
• Soil Type: Prefers well-drained soil but can adapt to various soil types, including sandy or clay soils.
• Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the establishment period. However, once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant. Avoid waterlogged conditions as this can lead to root rot.  Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a strong root system. After that, reduce watering frequency, but do not let the soil dry out completely. In hotter climates, occasional deep watering will help maintain its health and colour.
• Fertilisation: Is not a heavy feeder. A light application of balanced, slow-release fertiliser in Spring is usually sufficient to keep it growing well. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive growth and loss of the plant’s compact form
• Maintenance: In late Winter or early Spring, trim back any dead or damaged foliage to encourage fresh new growth. This will keep the plant looking tidy and vibrant. If the plant becomes too large or unruly, it can be divided and replanted.
• Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Mulching also helps to keep the roots cool in hot weather.
• Dividing: Every few years, divide the clumps in early Spring to prevent overcrowding and to rejuvenate the plant. This also provides an opportunity to propagate new plants.
