Buddleja Lochinch, commonly known as ‘Butterfly Bush’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a captivating and ornamental deciduous shrub that graces gardens with its elegant beauty and irresistible allure. This cultivar is a notable member of the Buddleja genus, renowned for its ability to attract a plethora of vibrant and delicate butterflies, making it a cherished addition to any outdoor space.

This variety boasts a graceful and arching growth habit, reaching a mature height and spread of around 2.5 metres. Its lance-shaped leaves are a lush green, creating a lovely backdrop for the true stars of the show—the stunning clusters of flowers. The blossoms appear in the Summer months, forming elongated panicles densely packed with tiny, tubular florets. These blooms exhibit a captivating colour palette that ranges from soft lavender and lilac to deeper shades of purple, creating a delightful contrast against the backdrop of foliage.

What truly sets this plant apart is its ability to attract a diverse array of butterflies and other pollinators. The nectar-rich flowers emit a sweet and enticing fragrance, acting as a magnet for these beautiful insects. As they flit and flutter among the blossoms, the garden is transformed into a mesmerising display of colour and movement, evoking a sense of tranquility and wonder.

How to care for your Buddleja Lochinch

  • Planting: Choose a sunny location: Select a spot in your garden that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Full sun exposure is essential for healthy growth and abundant flowering.  Ensure well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Loosen the soil and add compost or well-rotted manure before planting to improve drainage and provide nutrients.
  • Watering:  Water the newly planted shrub regularly to help it establish a strong root system. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged, during the first growing season.  Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant. Water deeply and infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot.
  • Pruning:  In late Winter or early Spring, before new growth emerges, prune back the previous year’s growth to encourage vigorous new shoots. Cut the stems down to about 12 to 18 inches above ground level.  Remove spent flower spikes regularly to promote continuous blooming and prevent the plant from self-seeding excessively.   Prune to maintain the desired shape and size.  This variety responds well to pruning and can be kept more compact with regular maintenance.
  • Fertilising:  Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early Spring as new growth begins. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for application rates.
  • Mulching:  Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant, leaving a few inches of space around the stem. Mulch helps retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

By providing the appropriate growing conditions, regular maintenance, and attention to its needs, you can enjoy the beauty and allure of Buddleja Lochinch as it attracts a symphony of butterflies and adds a touch of elegance to your garden.
