Bergenia Autumn Magic or more commonly called Elephant’s Ears, makes a small, neat, repeat flowering perennial, forming a clump of deep green foliage lightly tinted red, making this an ideal ground cover providing year round interest. The clusters of mid-pink flowers that emerge in Spring and again in Autumn are very popular among bees and butterflies and recommended by the RHS for use as pollinators. Surprisingly hardy, the all-year relevance does not die down in the colder months; the rounded leaves turning rich browns and reds in Winter, with added sparkle when covered with frost.
Looking After Your Bergenia Autumn Magic
Generally pest and disease free, although may be affected by vine weevil, slugs or snails ( easily remedied ). Bergenia Autumn Magic prefers a humus rich soil, although tolerant to most soils and conditions. Bergenia are well suited to any dry areas under the shade of a deciduous tree / hedge, or sloping bank helping to suppress any weeds. remove any faded flower spikes and damaged or dead leaves throughout the year to help deter any slugs or snails and keep them fresh looking. Towards Autumn provide a good mulch of well rotted garden compost or leaf mould, now or during early Spring is a good time also to propagate by dividing any larger clumps and moving to a new location.
