Bergenia Abenglut Evening Glow, commonly known as ‘Elephant Ears’  is a species of evergreen perennial plant that is native to the Himalayas and parts of China.  The plant is known for its large, glossy green leaves and clusters of pink or red flowers that bloom in the Spring.  It is a compact, clump-forming perennial that can reach up to 30 centimetres tall and 60 centimetres widewide. The flowers are magenta in colour and they appear in clusters on tall stems blooming in early Spring.

This plant is ideal for gardeners who are looking for an easy-care, low-maintenance perennial. It prefers well-draining soil and can grow in full sun to partial shade.   In addition to its ornamental value, it is also a great option for gardens with wildlife as it provides nectar for pollinators and the leaves provide shelter for small animals.

How to care for your Bergenia Evening Glow

Here are a few tips for caring for this plant:

  • Sunlight: It prefers partial shade to full sun. It can tolerate full sun, but in hot climates, it is best to provide some afternoon shade to protect the leaves from sunburn.
  • Soil: This plant prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil types, but prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0).
  • Watering: It is drought-tolerant once established, but it is important to keep the soil consistently moist during the first growing season. After that, it should only be watered during prolonged periods of drought.
  • Fertilising: It is not a heavy feeder, but it will benefit from an application of slow-release, balanced fertiliser in the Spring.
  • Pruning: This plant does not require regular pruning. If needed, it can be cut back to the ground in the spring, before new growth appears.
  • Winter Care: It is hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C. In areas with severe winters, it is recommended to provide a protective layer of mulch around the base of the plant to insulate the roots.

By following these tips, you can keep your Bergenia Evening Glow healthy, and enjoy its beautiful dark pink flowers for years to come.
