Berberis Thunbergii Bagatelle, also known as  ‘Japanese Barberry Bagatelle’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a dwarf and very compact, rounded, spiny shrub which has deep bronze/cherry red leaves that deepen to shades of rich purple towards Autumn.

This dwarf shrub is an ideal candidate for brightening up any patio or rockery and is often used as a small informal edging plant to a border. During  Spring small bright yellow flowers hang in clusters amongst the darker coloured leaves providing an ideal pollinator attracting bees and butterflies to the garden. Bright red berries appear towards Autumn providing additional food for the winter wildlife.

How to care for your Berberis Bagatelle

  • Soil: Thrives in well-draining soil that is slightly acidic. It prefers moist but not waterlogged soil, so make sure the soil drains well.
  • Watering: The plant requires regular watering, especially during the summer months. Water the plant deeply once or twice a week, depending on the weather conditions. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot.
  • Fertiliser: Benefits from regular fertilisation. Use a balanced fertiliser in the Spring, and again in the Summer if necessary.
  • Pruning: Prune in late Winter or early Spring before new growth begins. This will help maintain the plant’s shape and size, and also promote new growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches, as well as any branches that are crossing or rubbing against each other.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. It will tolerate some shade, but too much shade can cause the plant to become leggy and less attractive.
  • Mulching: Mulching around the base of the plant can help conserve moisture and suppress weed growth. Use organic mulch such as wood chips or bark.

By following these care tips, you can help ensure that your Berberis Bagatelle remains healthy and attractive for many years to come.
