Berberis Atropurpurea Nana, also known as the ‘Japanese Barberry’ is a holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit. It is a rounded, spiny shrub of a neat compact habit and has small bright red leaves in Spring which change to a deep wine red colour when mature. These leaves make for a wonderful backdrop for the scented clusters of small yellow flowers which appear in the Spring, making it an ideal pollinator. These are later followed by an abundant crop of bright red berries. These small but stunning plants are ideal on the patio or for planting in a mixed border, or informal hedging especially in coastal areas.
How to care for your Berberis Atropurpurea Nana
- Soil: Prefers well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. It is also important to ensure that the soil is not waterlogged, as this can cause root rot.
- Watering: The plant needs regular watering, especially during hot and dry weather. However, be careful not to overwater it, as this can also cause root rot. Water the plant deeply once or twice a week, depending on the weather conditions.
- Fertiliser: Benefits from regular fertilisation during the growing season. Apply a balanced fertiliser in the Spring, and again in the Summer if necessary.
- Pruning: Prune the plant in late Winter or early Spring before new growth begins. This will help maintain the plant’s shape and size, and also promote new growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches, as well as any branches that are crossing or rubbing against each other.
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun to partial shade. It will tolerate some shade, but too much shade can cause the plant to become leggy and less attractive.
- Mulching: Mulching around the base of the plant can help conserve moisture and suppress weed growth. Use organic mulch such as wood chips or bark.
By following these care tips, you can help ensure that your Berberis Thunbergii Atropurpurea Nana remains healthy and attractive for many years to come.
