Berberis Red Pillar is a deciduous spiny shrub of narrow, upright habit. Named for its dark red-purple leaves which change to a stunning bright red in autumn, the foliage is not the only attractive thing as it also produces pale yellow flowers with red under tones in the Spring. An ideal pollinator, followed later in the season by glossy red berries. Ideal for border planting and giving a little height up to 1.5 metres within a mixed shrub planting scheme and is also suitable for coastal areas.
Looking After Your Berberis Red Pillar
Berberis Red Pillar or Barberry is an easy to grow and generally very low maintenance shrub, preferring a fertile, moist well drained soil in a sunny or semi-shaded area of the garden. Very little pruning is required, although a gentle clip to retain its shape and remove any damaged or unwanted branches is best done in the Autumn or after flowering. Early Spring is a good time to give a generous feed of a general purpose fertiliser to encourage good, strong fresh growth.
