Berberis Red Lady, or more commonly known as ‘Darts Red Lady’, is a very striking variety and has justly attained the RHS Award of Garden Merit. The deep purple of its young leaves contrast beautifully with the pale yellow, slightly scented flowers which appear along the length of its branches in late Spring, these are later followed by small red berries, a good food source for the garden wild-life. A slow growing, deciduous shrub, the purple young foliage changes through a variety of orange to red shades towards the Autumn before dropping and exposing its slender spiny branches.
Looking After Your Berberis Red Lady
Berberis Red Lady is a very low maintenance plant, slow growing and very hardy. This colourful Wintergreen Barberry prefers to be grown in a fertile, moist but well drained soil, and a sunny or semi-shaded area of the garden. Any pruning required is best done during late Autumn when any dead or damaged stems can be removed.
