Azara serrata, commonly known as ‘Saw toothed Azara’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a species of evergreen shrub or small tree that is native to South America, particularly in Chile and Argentina.  The plant is characterised by its small, glossy green leaves and clusters of small, yellow flowers that bloom in the Spring and Summer.

This Azara can grow up to 4 metres wide and  tall making it an ideal choice for hedging, screening, or as a specimen plant. It is tolerant of a wide range of soils, including clay and sandy soils, and can grow in full sun to partial shade.

This plant is ideal for gardeners who are looking for a low-maintenance, evergreen shrub. It is easy to care for and requires very little pruning. This plant is also a good option for gardens with wildlife, as it attracts pollinators and beneficial insects.

In addition to its ornamental value, Azara serrata has been traditionally used for medicinal purposes by indigenous people in South America. Its leaves and bark are believed to have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

The plant was first described by French botanist Philibert Commerson in 1778, during his expedition to South America. The species was named after the Spanish naturalist Don Felipe Santiago de Azara, who collected plant specimens in South America during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Caring for your Azara Serrata

To care for an Azara serrata plant, follow these steps:

  • Light: This Azara prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Soil: It prefers well-draining, acidic soil with a pH of 5.5-6.5. A mix of equal parts peat moss, perlite and pine bark works well.
  • Temperature: It prefers cool to moderate temperatures between 55-75°F (13-24°C).
  • Fertiliser: Feed  every 4-6 weeks with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser during the growing season.
  • Pruning: Prune as needed to control its shape and size.

By following these care tips, your plant should thrive. Keep in mind that some plants may take a little time to adjust to their new environment before they begin to grow and flourish.
