Aucuba Japonica, also known as ‘Spotted or Japanese Laurel’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of garden Merit, is a compact, medium sized, hardy evergreen shrub ideal for both sunny or shady positions.  It has large, oval shaped, glossy leaves which are splashed with gold and has small purple flowers appearing in mid Spring.

The male form of the Aucuba has yellow anthers in erect panicles and the female form shows glossy bright red berries after it flowers towards the Autumn.

Looking After Your Aucuba Japonica

  • Light: Prefers a shady or partially shaded spot, away from direct sunlight. It can grow in full shade, but the variegation on the leaves will not be as pronounced.
  • Watering: This plant prefers moist, but well-draining soil. Water it regularly, especially during hot and dry weather. Make sure the soil doesn’t become waterlogged, as this can cause root rot.
  • Fertiliser: Doesn’t require much fertiliser, but you can give it a balanced fertiliser once or twice a year in the Spring and Autumn. Follow the instructions on the fertiliser package for the correct dosage.
  • Pruning: This plant is a slow grower, but it can become leggy if left unpruned. Prune it in the Spring to shape it and remove any dead or damaged branches. You can also prune it to control its size.
  • Propagation: It can be propagated by stem cuttings taken in the Summer. Dip the cuttings in rooting hormone and plant them in a well-draining potting mix. Keep the soil moist and the pot in a warm, bright spot until the cuttings root.

By following these simple care instructions, you can enjoy a beautiful and healthy Aucuba japonica in your garden or home.
