Aucuba Golden King, also known as ‘Japanese or Spotted Laurel’ and holder of the much coveted RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a hardy, compact evergreen shrub providing year round interest, with colourful large glossy green leaves and spotted golden yellow markings.Tiny dark purple flowers are produced in spring, but more noticeable are the red autumn/winter fruits highly prized by the garden wild-life. Adaptable to both full sun or shade the Aucuba have many uses, from brightening a dull shaded area to forming a dense, impenetrable and colourful hedge.
Looking After Your Aucuba Japonica Golden King
Allow maintenance evergreen, hardy shrub, requiring very little care. This easy to grow Aucuba is not fussy, so is happy in most soil types providing they are not water-logged, and adapts well to both deep shade or full sun, the sunnier the position the better the berry colour. Early Spring remove any damage or unwanted branches to maintain size and shape, at the same time apply a good quality general purpose fertiliser to encourage plenty of fresh new growth through the coming season. If using to form a hedge plant approximately 60-90 cm spacing.
