Arbutus Unedo, also known as the ‘Strawberry tree’, and a holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a large, hardy, evergreen shrub or tree of bushy habit with distinctive orange- reddish shedding rough bark, looking very similar in appearance to cinnamon sticks. Its glossy bright green leaves provide a suitable back-ground to its small white pink tinged flowers which appear early Autumn at the same time as its fruit with strawberry-like appearance from the previous years flowers start to turn red. Excellent pollinator for the garden, and suitable for coastal planting schemes.
Looking After Your Arbutus Unedo
Generally pest and disease free and an easy to grow plant in many if not all locations. a low maintenance large shrub or small tree which will benefit from a sunny fertile area in all types of garden from cottage planting schemes, to coastal areas. Requires minimal pruning, but be sure to remove any broken or damaged branches. Plant in fertile, moist and well drained soil.
