Anemone Whirlwind, commonly known as ‘Japanese Anemone’ is a vigorous, upright, suckering, deciduous perennial that has large dark green palmate leaves which are softly hairy underneath.  Semi-double white flowers with slightly rolled petals appear from late Summer into Autumn.

The Anemone Whirlwind, commonly known as ‘Japanese Anemone’  is a unique and stunning perennial flower that adds colour and charm to any garden. It features delicate white petals that spiral out from a central disk, creating a whirlwind-like effect. The plant is hardy and easy to care for, making it a great choice for both experienced gardeners and beginners. It blooms in late spring and early summer, and can reach up to 1 mere in height. This Anemone is a great addition to a cottage garden or mixed border, and its delicate flowers make it a popular choice for cutting gardens. To ensure the best growth and blooming, plant in well-drained soil in a spot that receives full sun or partial shade. With proper care and attention, this beautiful flower will provide years of enjoyment for any gardener.

Caring for your Anemone Whirlwind

  • Planting: Prefers well-drained soil and a spot that receives full sun to partial shade. It can tolerate some sun, but too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to wilt and the flowers to fade. When planting, make sure to space the bulbs about 15-20 centimetres apart to give them enough room to grow.
  • Watering: It is relatively drought-tolerant, but it is important to keep the soil consistently moist during its growing season. Water the plant regularly, especially during dry spells. Avoid over-watering, as this can lead to rot.
  • Fertilising: It is not particularly demanding when it comes to fertilisation. A slow-release fertiliser or compost can be added to the soil during planting. Alternatively, a liquid fertiliser can be applied to the soil every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.
  • Deadheading: To encourage re-blooming, it is important to remove the spent flowers as soon as they begin to fade. This can be done by snipping the stem just below the flower head.
  • Winter care: It is hardy and can tolerate frost. However, to ensure the best growth in the following season, it is recommended to mulch the soil around the plant with a layer of straw or leaves to protect it from harsh winter weather.

By following these care tips, you will be able to enjoy the beautiful, whirlwind-like blooms of this Anemone for years to come.
