Acer Palmatum Dissectum Garnet, commonly known as the ‘Japanese Maple’ and holder of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, is a stunning deciduous tree that is native to Japan, Korea, and China. It is a popular ornamental tree in gardens and landscapes, appreciated for its vibrant, rich, burgundy coloured foliage and unique, cascading, delicate structure.

This Japanese Maple is a slow-growing tree, with a height that typically ranges between 2.5 and 4 metres, and a width of about 1.5 to 2.5 metres. It has an elegant, cascading habit, with its weeping branches that are covered in deeply cut, lacy, and delicate leaves.

The leaves are deeply lobed and dissected, with each leaf having about 5 to 9 sharply pointed lobes. The foliage emerges as a bright red colour in the Spring, deepening to a rich burgundy as the season progresses, and culminating in a brilliant scarlet in the Autumn. The coloration of the leaves is especially vibrant in the sun, but the tree can also tolerate partial shade.

In terms of placement, the Garnet Japanese Maple is best suited for a location where it can be appreciated as a focal point or accent in the garden. It can also be used as a container plant or in a small courtyard or patio.

Overall, this is a stunning and unique ornamental tree that can add a touch of elegance and colour to any garden or landscape. With its cascading habit, delicate foliage, and vibrant coloration, it is sure to be a highlight and focal point in any setting.

How to care for your Acer Palmatum Dissectum Garnet

  • Soil: Prefers a well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Make sure the soil is moist but not waterlogged.
  • Watering: The tree should be watered regularly, especially during the hot and dry Summer months. Water deeply once or twice a week, making sure to water the soil around the roots and not just the leaves.
  • Fertiliser: Apply a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in the Spring before the new growth appears. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application rates.
  • Pruning: Prune the tree in late Winter or early Spring to remove any dead, damaged, or diseased branches. You can also prune to shape the tree, but be careful not to remove too much foliage as this can damage the tree.
  • Sunlight: Prefers partial shade to full sun, although it can tolerate some shade. Avoid planting it in a location that receives full afternoon sun, as this can scorch the leaves.
  • Mulch: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture in the soil and suppress weed growth. Make sure the mulch is not touching the trunk of the tree.

By following these care tips, you can help ensure that your Acer Palmatum Dissectum Garnet remains healthy and vibrant for years to come.
