Abelia Grandiflora or more commonly known as the Glossy Abelia makes a fine semi-evergreen, low maintenance shrub, with gracefully arching branches along which the dark green glossy leaves are formed, providing an ideal contrast to the fragrant, white tinged, pale pink flowers produced over a long period from June to October, and greatly prized by the local Bee population, and in turn the avid honey producers amongst us. This Abelia shrub is equally well suited as a specimen within the border, or used as a focal point when grouped together to make an informal and colourful hedge .
Looking After Your Glossy Abelia
Generally pest and disease free an easy to grow shrub, which will benefit from being positioned in a sunny, sheltered area of the garden, planted in a fertile, moist, but well drained soil. The sunnier the position the more flowers will be produced, regular dead heading will also encourage the production of more flowers.
To maintain the ideal shape of your glossy Abelia pruning may be done during March and April.
